Fiberglass Wall Panels As Tub Surrounds

Fiberglass Wall Panels

A tight budget and the fact that this is the only bathroom in the house didn’t allow for a major remodel when I bought the fixer, fours years ago.  The tub/shower was the thing I wanted/needed to get done right away. I removed the old dry wall,  tile and wall panel. After installing the new cement board, I purchased FRP panels (Fiberglass-reinforced plastic) for my tub/shower surround.

Fiberglass Wall Panels

FRP panels are a laminate surface wall and ceiling panel that is ideal for wet environments like bathrooms. Fiberglass is mixed with plastic to produce panels that are tough, durable and water-resistant. FRP can be installed in any area of a bathroom and will help ensure the walls remain easy to clean, for the life of the installation.

This is what I had in mind minus the price – Swanstone 3-Piece Easy Up Tub Wall.

This is what I created: My own “Easy Up” with these 4×8  FRP panels for $33 each.

The FRP  panels provide a very basic, clean, simple look – they may not be for everyone. Some people prefer the high-end look of tile. And that’s fine too. Heck, maybe someday I’ll have tile in the shower. But in the meantime,  FRP is extremely durable, resists mildew, moisture and staining and is easy to clean. It’s also a lot more affordable.

Have a great week!

Board and Batten and New Paint in Bathroom

board and battenWhen I bought our house, the only bathroom in the house wasn’t cute at all. I’m being polite – the bathroom was gross. It had mold, several layers of tile, a yucky floor, broken vanity, ugly wall paper, cracked mirror… A tight budget and the fact that this is the only bathroom in the house didn’t allow for a major remodel. So I worked with what I had.

board and battenSince I didn’t replace the base board, all I had to do was pick up two primed lattice strips at Home Depot.

bathroom refreshA couple of years back, I painted the walls a  bluish/turquoise color. But now I wanted a classic grey so I went with Benjamin Moore “Moonshine”.
benjamin mooreInstalling a board and batten is fairly easy yet time-consuming. There are hundreds of tutorials on the internet… no need to bore you with mine. Installing board and batten involves lots of cutting, nailing, caulking and painting. Oh, btw, most tutorials will tell you to use a nail gun. Well, I don’t have one so I used a regular hammer and finishing nails. It worked just fine, but one of these days I’d love to get a nail gun.

My youngest started school last week, and two days ago, one of his sisters went back to college. After a long hot summer with lots of people in the house, camping gear, masses of dirty clothes, sand and dust, the house was ready for a refresh. First, I cleaned out the guest room (I’m still not done in there), then I shifted my attention to the one and only bathroom in our house. When your home only has one bathroom, a big remodel can be very difficult. After all, we need a toilet and a place to shower. So instead of ripping out everything, we work with what we have.

Not only is there only one bathroom, it’s also very small. I try to keep it as bright and light as possible. Of course, it also has to be functional. For my refresh I started with a board and batten, which I installed behind the door.

board and batten

Installing a board and batten is inexpensive and fairly easy. However, it is time-consuming and involves lots of cutting, caulking and painting. But this labor-intensive project is well worth it. The sight of board and batten makes me happy. Instantly, the wall has character. My board and batten also functions as a towel holder. In a small bathroom space cannot be wasted.

After installing the board and batten, I painted the walls a lovely grey with leftover paint. This was quick and painless. One advantage to having a small bathroom, I guess. I also deep cleaned and got rid of any unnecessary clutter.

Next on my list was getting new bathroom items. Shopping at Target was a success. I found everything I needed and more. Target has the nicest bathroom essentials and accessories. I also found two shirts for my son.

New towels were much needed as was toilet paper. When you have five or more people use one bathroom, toilet paper disappears in no time.  I had always wanted a cute basket for my toilet paper.

I found this cute basket to store the Quilted Northern® which has 4x more sheets and is every bit as comfortable. Now I can forget refilling the roll for longer periods of time which means fewer store trips and one less thing to think about.  I am glad I can cut down on the constant overturn. Speaking of saving time, did you know Target has a Subscription Service that delivers staple items on a regular basis? This can certainly save time.

I never thought I’d say this about toilet paper but Quilted Northern® is a luxurious bath tissue – It’s super soft and strong.

Target has so many nice soap dispensers. At one point I had three in my cart because I couldn’t decide which one to get. I finally decided on this one with a matching tumbler and toothbrush holder.

I also brought home a new bath rug, a shower curtain and shower curtain hooks.

Although the changes were minor, the bathroom feels bright, clean and refreshed. Now I can focus on organizing and decorating the rest of the house.
