Growing up in Germany, facial steams were part of my weekly routine. Both my mom and grandma swore by steams. Not only is steaming great for stuffy noses, it is also an excellent beauty treatment. Steaming helps us sweat out skin impurities. I like to incorporate weekly steaming  into my regular beauty and wellness routine.  It’s a quick, simple and inexpensive treatment that can be done within the comfort of my home. Doing this, however, makes me feel as though I’m undergoing a fancy spa treatment. Win win!

While there are many benefits to just steaming with plain water, the addition of tea bags to a steam bath makes it even more therapeutic.

DIY Steaming:

Boil some water and pour it over the tea bags. I use all kinds of tea flavors for my steam. At night, I enjoy steaming and drinking Bigelow Benefits  Chamomile and Lavender Herbal Tea. This herbal blend of  beautiful and fragrant flowers helps me slow down and take a moment to relax. The flavor and aroma of this tea are so beautiful; probably my favorite combo.  I like to drink this tea right before bed time.

Create a towel tunnel and steam for about 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure your towel is large enough to trap the steam. Also, cleanse your face of makeup and skin care products before steaming.

When you’re done, your face will feel hydrated and soft; your mind relaxed and calm. I like to finish with a splash of cold water.  Afterwards, I apply a high-quality moisturizer. For a full evening of skin pampering, I exfoliate before steaming. This leaves my skin feeling refreshed, clean, and detoxified. I finish my pampering with a nice cup of Bigelow tea.

My Natural “Flu Shot” Recipe

Flu and cold season is here and I often hear people talk about getting the flu shot. Not me. I like to protect myself from the flu naturally by eating a nutritious diet, exercising, getting enough sleep, and drinking lots of tea. Also, during the cold season I get a little obsessive with wiping down counter tops and washing my hands a lot. One more thing, essential oils are something I use regularly. They are immune-boosting and germ-fighting and I put them to work on my body and around my home. The best way is to apply them undiluted to the soles of the feet at bedtime.

I recently made this all-natural immunity boosting concoction  for when the germs start “going around”.  I keep it in the fridge and I just scoop out a few tablespoons, add hot water and Bigelow tea and enjoy this delicious and soothing drink daily.

Tea is one of the most tried and true methods of fighting off colds and flu. As children, my sister and I drank chamomile tea instead of juice. We loved it so much then, and still do.

I  drink tea all-year-long. In the summer, I prefer my homemade iced tea. It’s my favorite drink to have after hours of mowing and weeding in the heat. Bigelow herbal teas are my favorite – green tea, chamomile, and peppermint. In the winter, I like a warm cup of tea before bed. It helps me relax and sleep better. On the rare occasion that I do get a sore throat, a cup of hot tea is all I want to sooth the throat and warm my body.

Recently, I started drinking the Bigelow Lemon Ginger herbal tea with Probiotics, which supports a healthy digestion.  It’s delicious and so good for you. I like the foil pouches the tea comes in. They protect the tea and keep it fresh. I stick a couple of pouches in my purse and bring them to work with me.

Walmart carries a nice assortment of caffeine-free Bigelow teas in their tea and coffee aisle. I usually get a few boxes because I love having a nice stash on hand. As far as quality, Bigelow is a family-owned business that  prides itself on using high quality ingredients. If you drink tea as often as I do, you want to tea proudly with Bigelow.

At Walmart, I also grabbed lemons, ginger, cinnamon sticks and raw honey for my concoction.

Lemon:  High in vitamin C, which keeps the immune system strong.

Ginger: Ginger has been used for thousands of years as a natural treatment for colds and flu around Asia. It  helps improve the immune system.

Honey: Honey contains antioxidant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties that fight against the virus and bacteria to treat the cold.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon is beneficial as it contains anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties.

 Lemon, Honey, Ginger, Cinnamon in a Mason Jar

Just add hot water and tea and you have the most soothing drink.

Ingredients:

2 lemons

2 pieces of fresh ginger

2 cinnamon sticks

1 cup raw honey (or more)

12 oz mason jar

Directions:

Cut lemons into thin slices.

Repeat the same with ginger.

Layer lemons and ginger in a mason jar.  Add cinnamon sticks.

Pour honey over the ingredients.

Close the lid and store the jar in the fridge.

This recipe will keep in the fridge for up to two months.

When you want a cup of soothing tea, scoop 2 tablespoons into a mug of hot water and add  Bigelow tea —be sure to get whole pieces of ginger and lemon. Allow to steep for 3-4 minutes.
