Last week was a very busy week for me, with lots of things going on.  All week long I kept adding increasingly to my already busy schedule.  By Friday, I was completely worn out, tired and sore.

After I dropped my son off at a high school football game, I ran a detoxifying bath. A detox bath is a great way to help your body get rid of toxins and ease some of these “groggy” symptoms. There are several ways to detox – dry brushing your skin, juicing, drinking detox teas, sitting in a sauna, etc. Taking a detox bath is probably my favorite method.

We all know that our skin is our largest organ. Everything we put on our skin and into our mouth is absorbed by our skin. When you sit in a bath your body temperature rises and your pores open up. As your pores open up you want to make sure you have different “ingredients” in the bathtub to optimize the time you’re spending in there.

DETOX BATH RECIPE

Ingredients:

2 cups Epsom salt

1 cup baking soda

5 – 10 drops of your favorite essential oil

Since I’m a big fan of Aromatherapy, I like to incorporate it into my wellness routine. Adding essential oils  to my baths feels wonderful because the oils’ scent helps stimulate the relaxation of my body and mind.

I have been using Nature’s Truth® essential oils for years now. The magnesium in Epsom salt helps you relax and ease the tension in your muscles. Baking soda helps eliminate the chlorine in the water.

Instructions:

Run your bath water as hot as you like. Add the “ingredients”. Soak for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, I always drink a glass of water.  A  green smoothie is also very refreshing after a hot bath.

MAKE THE BATH AN EXPERIENCE

One of the things I like to do when I take a bath is set my mind on something so while I’m in there I can think about it. The scent of an essential  oil is perfect to be used alongside this mindful meditation.

It only makes sense to use the 20 -30 minutes of bathing wisely. This is a good time to remind yourself what you’re grateful for… Or perhaps to think about how you can make a difference in someone’s life. Think about how you can make your life better. Make the bath an experience! When you come out, feel like a “new person”. This bath can be your opportunity to get some clarity.detox bath

Personally, I go to bed right after my bath. I’m always exhausted after a detox bath, but in the morning, I feel refreshed, energized, and with a new outlook on life.

I don’t believe in extreme things like fasting and cleanses, where you drink juice, or (only) lemon water for a week. Instead I believe a healthy lifestyle – eating healthy, drinking plenty of water and exercising – is important to detoxifying because it enables our body to do what is intended to do.

Small shifts in your diet, skin care regimen, and attitude can make you feel and look amazing.

Let me show you how I like to detox my body, skin, and mind the simple and inexpensive way. No doubt, detoxing helps me feel healthy, strong, energetic… and young.

Bentonite Clay is a common ingredient in detox and cleansing products. It has the ability to absorb toxins. I like to use it as a facial mask or detox bath. Some people also use it internally, but I haven’t tried it yet.

I’m such a fan of herbal teas. Nature is my pharmacy… it has so much to offer. Nature is more gentle and supporting and treats the core rather than the symptom, which is what you would use a synthetic drug for. The main herb in this  Yogi DeTox tea is dandelion, which is very detoxifying for your liver,  which happens to be your main organ of detoxification. It’s truly a delicious blend of herbs with cinnamon bark, ginger root, burdock root and much more.

Dry skin brushing is something I learned from my mom. In Europe, dry brushing is very popular and not just for beauty but for the health as well. We have a lymphatic system that needs to be stimulated. Dry brushing is a great way to stimulate and eliminate toxins as well as strengthen our immune system. Dry brushing is also a great exfoliating tool for your skin – great for circulation and fighting cellulite. Remember to always brush up to your heart. I like to do it before I go in the shower.

green smoothie

Eat more greens! The best way to eat lots of greens each day is a smoothie. The dark leafy greens are super healthy and inexpensive. The base for my green smoothie is baby spinach or kale, banana, lemon, and flax seeds. You can add other things like almonds, chia seeds, oats, ginger, blueberries or anything else you like. These detox smoothies are filling, delicious, nutrient dense and also amazing for your skin. With the right blender, smoothies are quick and easy to make. Throw away the soda and hop on the smoothie bandwagon!

workout

Exercise is important because it enables our body to do what it is made to do.  It also helps work up a good sweat and clear the mind of destructive thoughts. In my opinion, exercise is the perfect way to detox your attitude. I’m ALWAYS in a better mood after my workout. You don’t need a fancy gym membership or expensive equipment.  Go on a brisk walk and you will feel better!
