The kids and I love our dogs, Teddy and Billy. They are part of our family and we don’t even remember what life was like before we took them in, several years ago. Our furry friends provide us with a huge amount of love and affection. On some days, they also provide us with yucky smells and other things.
I love a clean, clutter-free and fresh-smelling home and living with a dog doesn’t necessarily mean your house has to look and smell like a dog house. I am a clean freak (especially since I just refinished my hardwood floors) and over the years I’ve learned how to keep our home clean, fresh and presentable even with two dogs.
The following tips work for me and my family. Hopefully you can incorporate one or all and keep your home from smelling like a dog kennel.
1. Bathe your dogs
Most dogs don’t mind getting and staying dirty. However, most pet parents would rather not share their lives with smelly or dirty dogs. Bathing your dogs regular makes a huge difference to how your home smells. I bathe mine every other week. Just remember, use a soap-free or moisturizing shampoo to prevent the skin from becoming dry.
2. Brush your dog
Brush your dog every day. This is especially important if you have multiple dogs with longer fur like I do. Spending only five minutes a day brushing your dog will cut down on a ton of hair floating around your home. Brushing also gets rid of flaky skin by distributing natural oils through your dog’s coat. You’ll notice that your dog looks and smells better.
3. Wash their bedding
Be sure to wash their bedding, blankets, toys, etc, weekly. Teddy loves to sit on the very top of our couch next to the window. People-watching is his favorite thing in the world. I bet he thinks is in charge of the entire neighborhood. In addition to washing, I also vacuum rugs and couch every week.
4. Use household items to deodorize
Baking soda is a miracle when it comes to getting rid of pet odors. Sprinkle it on your carpet and let it sit for a couple of hours and vacuum. You’ll notice the rooms smell better.
5. Like a breeze
As a dog owner you might want to invest in a good air freshener. I needed something that provided immediate fragrance release and was safe for kids and pets. The Aroma Breeze Fragrance System provides both and more. It is safe, clean and chic. No sprays, no flames, and no mess. What’s unique about this system is that it distributes fragrance from an innovative fragrance “Halo” for continued aroma distribution. My local Walmart has a huge selection and I smelled every single one.
The Aroma Breeze system is located near the candle isle at select Walmart stores or you can get it at Walmart.com. There is a variety of unique designs for all areas of the home, inside and out.
How to use Aroma Breeze Fan Fragrance System: Follow instructions carefully. Begin by removing the canopy and placing a fragrance halo on the fan unit. Put the canopy back on and switch on the unit to enjoy instant fragrance.
You can plug it in or go cordless with the option of putting in batteries, which allows you to move it from room to room.AromaBreeze uses no heat. The cool whisper fan is a quiet and safe way to fragrance your home. Doesn’t it look pretty?I chose the Peaceful Perch design. It’s my favorite color and the design is charming. Not only does AromaBreeze make our home smell amazing, it also adds style and charm to my home decor.
6. Clean messes right away
When accidents happen, clean them up as soon as they happen. If you leave a mess, it will stain and smell. Also, your dog will want to come back to that spot and use it again thinking it’s his toilet.
Tip: Don’t use cleaners with ammonia – they smell just like urine to dogs.
Now that I’ve shared with you how I keep my house from smelling like a dog kennel and how the Aroma Breeze Fragrance System helps with that, I’d like to hear from you.
Do you have pets? If so, how do you keep your house smelling fresh? Share your tips!

April 1, 2015I use pet wipes on our dog almost daily- any sort of funky odor and she gets wiped. I feel bad sometimes but she has long hair and it tends to gather outdoor odors! #client
