DIY Large Letter Art

Here’s a quick and inexpensive way to add art to your walls. This typography print is simple and clean… just what my 13-year-old wanted. And black and white is always a timeless, classic duo, don’t you think?

I wanted the simple letter art to add a punch , so I went bold and big. Plus, I figured the piece will create a perfect shape for other prints or elements to align against, making this black and white layout very neat and organized.

My son, Daniel, recently got a new bed, mattress, new sheets, comforter, etc., so I decided to update his wall art. He likes clean lines and modern design so he was happy with the large letter print.

I went ahead and designed the large letter art in PicMonkey.

If you aren’t familiar with PicMonkey, it is a free photo editing/design site. You can upload your photos, resize, crop, and enhance them. You can also add text, textures, color, etc. Or you can design posters, cards, business cards, even yearbooks with PicMonkey. It’s super easy to navigate, and offers a bunch of great design/edit tools. For a fee you can upgrade to Royal features but I find their free features offer plenty.  In PicMonkey I clicked on Design and then on Tt (text).

Another great website is Canva. It allows you to edit photos, add text, borders, stickers, etc. With Canva, you can also design graphics, invitations, posters, flyers, etc. It’s free and easy to use.

PicMonkey lets you pick from a variety of fonts, colors and sizes. I chose the font Francois One. Play around and explore this site; it’s really fun. Once I had my desired layout, I saved it to my PC and uploaded it to the Staples photo/print services site where I chose an Engineer Print.

This service is pretty awesome as you can pick from various sizes, black and white or color. I chose 24″ x 36″. The print was ready within an hour and the total cost was under $4. Their 18″ x 24″ is only $1.79 (color is only $2.99). You can get a print as large as 36″ x  48″ for under $8.

I placed the print inside a simple poster frame I made a couple of years back. I painted it black, then stapled the print, along with a large piece of cardboard, to the frame.

Since engineer prints are inexpensive and easy to make (and teenagers like to change their mind a lot), I can switch out the wall art throughout the year. Maybe next time he’ll let me add some color.
