When I was a little girl, my grandmother had an old farmhouse table and a bench in her backyard. The table sat under a cherry tree my mom planted when she was a little girl. My great-grandpa built the table from old scrap wood and with a few simple tools. No paint or stain was applied – just good old solid wood. Some of my best childhood memories happened at this table. I can still remember helping my grandmother cut fresh fruits and vegetables underneath the cherry tree. I can’t remember how many times my sister and I built a fort under the big table. For some reason, the best conversations always happened at this old table.
When my girls were little, they shared many delicious, home cooked meals with my grandmother at this table. To me a farmhouse table represents hard work, simpler times, working with hands, and gathering the family together – a mentality that sometimes gets lost in our busy lives.
Yesterday, I decided to make my own farmhouse table. I have a pile of scrap wood from an old fence in my backyard ,which I thought was perfect for a table. For this project I didn’t follow a particular plan. The table measures 30 inches high, 60 inches long, and 32 inches wide. I used ideas from AnaWhite.com and from Morelikehome.net. Basically, I used what I had laying around.
I love how it turned out. I love that the wood isn’t perfect – it definitely brings back fond memories – and I hope to make my own memories with my children at this farmhouse table.
Here’re a few pictures of the process:
I white-washed the top and stained the legs just a little bit with Minwax wood stain.
I built the bench months before I built this table.

That is wonderful you have all those great memories of times with your grandmother around her farm house table, and wonderful that you want to give those same great memories to your own children. Your table looks great all set and ready to go…………..
Hope you have as much fun and blessings with your children as you did as a child.
Blessings, Nellie
